The 12 Days of X-Mess
A quick check of this blog's archives shows that I have never posted a New Year's resolution. That's probably wise, considering that resolutions are made to be broken -- this article says only 8% of people actually achieve them. Why bother?

However, it occurred to me, what if I only tried to change my behavior for 12 days? If they happened to be the 12 days that I usually don't have a lot going on -- most of my clients are busy doing other things, no one's buying CDs, all the TV shows are reruns and every theater company in town is producing "A Christmas Carol" -- I would almost be guaranteed to achieve my goals, right?

So I'm introducing a new, short-term feature: The 12 Days of X-Mess, in which I will try to get control of the piles of paper, junk drawers, outdated clothes, old newspapers, and expired foodstuffs that have been accumulating in the apartment. (I must add, as a matter of pride, that my problem is clutter -- you won't find crusty week-old dishes in the sink or anything gross like that.) Starting tomorrow and continuing through Jan. 1, I'll tackle something different every day in my effort to have a beautifully clean home by 2007.

Clutter costs time and money. What inspired me to tackle this project was an unopened envelope I found in my office a couple days ago while I was looking for something. It was postmarked last spring and contained two free movie passes to any Landmark Theatre from the San Francisco Film Society. They expire on Dec. 31, 2006. Boy, would I have been mad if I'd found them sometime after New Year's!

If you aren't going to be traveling over the holidays, or committed to cooking a gourmet dinner for 15 people on Christmas Day, why not join me and make your own short-term resolution? After all, it's only 12 days...

Sue, I LOVE this idea--seriously, you should consider getting a trademark. Definitely an idea whose time (or at least 12 days of it) has come! Lynne
