The seventh day of X-Mess
In an episode of the TV series "Seinfeld," "The Pledge Drive," Jerry receives a thank you card from a woman named Kristin. His reaction is basically, "Oh, how nice"; then he throws the card in the trash, which really ticks Kristin off. "I put a lot of thought into this card." Jerry: "You signed your name and you addressed the envelope; it's not like you painted the picture and wrote the poem."

No wonder Jerry never had a problem with clutter (he was "thin, single and neat," remember?). I, on the other hand, have come across hundreds of greeting cards during my cleaning spree. Some I've had no difficulty dropping into the recycling bin, but what about, say, those photo Christmas cards with pictures of our friends' cute kids? Or anything with a personal handwritten note?

I saved a bunch of them in a nice archival box from (you guessed it) the Container Store -- so many that I managed to fill the box to the brim. Now I'm wondering whether I should start a new box (all of this year's Christmas cards are still on display), or take a second pass through the box and make sure I'm saving only my absolute favorites.

"You have no sentimentality," Kristin told Jerry. Oh, how much easier it must be to keep a clean house when that is the case.

Lessons learned: Be more ruthless. After all, what are the odds you'll ever look at the cards again once they're filed away in the box?
