| The sixth day of X-Mess |
We're halfway there, and the cleaning continues. I've been working in my office, filing (and recycling) papers and CDs. Earlier today, I got some real work from a client. Work! I felt joy at the prospect of having something to do that didn't involve tidying, and immediately set to work on the project, even though it didn't have to be done 'til next week. Who knew -- it turns out I'd rather do my job than sort through heaps of stuff.
Things are looking pretty good around here, but I know what's looming up ahead: the boxes. There are four moving boxes in the bedroom. They have been there for at least 14-15 months, ever since we had our bedroom and office painted. Inside the boxes are things like stuffed animals, gifts I never found a place for, framed photographs I don't have room to display, items I've picked up on my travels -- in other words, a fairly high percentage of what's in there has some sentimental value, but I just have no idea where to put it. Every time I have tried to go through one of the boxes during the past few months, I have felt an overwhelming sense of exhaustion and almost immediately given up. I'll probably organize everything else before I tackle them, but eventually, the boxes must be confronted.
Lessons learned: The only thing that makes filing less of a chore is having a labelmaker (I have a Dymo QX50). Even though I have pretty good handwriting, there's nothing like a printed label to give your file folders that professional look. There are a lot of good tips about filing in Getting Things Done by David Allen; I have the audio book and have listened to it twice now. Hopefully, some of it is finally starting to sink in. |

As you may have noted at my Flickr site, I finally got around to reshelving all the free-range books that were floating around our house (oh wait: the final reshelving of books wasn't documented there - just two photos of the last piles of books). Thing is, I like books, CDs, etc., to be in order...which means that if I let it go too long, it's a major task to reshelve them...since shelving fifty CDs (say) requires moving nearly that many CDs around (I start at the back of the alphabet) through the file cabinets, which are the three-shelf Can-Am kind, divided into five or six rows each. It's way easier to do that with only a couple of discs...but hey: laziness!

I have several boxes like the ones you describe Sue. I've never been able to part with the contents (sentimental rubbish, largely). In one move, oh a decade or so ago, I sealed up a box, put a date on it and labelled it "time capsule".
After my move in June, I still have not unpacked my books! Appauling, and makes me wonder how attached I am to them. One shelf of unread books is more then I can read anyway, so that seemed plenty. I unpacked all my CD's within the first few days though.

Pretty good handwriting? Only insofar as it's really really pretty and really really good. Andy has long wanted to create a font from it. Tell you what - you hand-write a bunch of labels for me and I'll get my stuff organized too.
You're doing a fabulous job, btw!
