| A Conical Glass special interactive feature |
In an effort to provide you, the loyal Conical Glass reader, with a more customized user experience, I am conducting the first-ever CG Reader's Poll. You -- yes, you -- can have an impact on what I do this weekend! I've listed several movies that are currently playing in town; you can vote on which one I should see and write up for the blog. To make things more interesting, I included one in the mix that I have no interest in seeing. If you're feeling diabolical, you can try and figure out which one it is and vote for it. I'll keep the survey live until I actually go see the movie (probably sometime on Sunday).

Ooh, ooh, I guess that the one you don't want to see is the Painted Veil!
I've the preview for it about a jillion times and I hate it and Edward Norton's fake English accent more every time. I do like the pissy look Naomi Watts gives when Truman Capote asks why they came up overland though.

It looks like the results of the survey are not visible to voters, so I will tell you that as of Friday night, "Casino Royale" is in the lead. Also, I'm annoyed that I forgot to put "Children of Men" in the list of options. As for Josh's guess, I have to admit that I really enjoyed "Death of Smoochy" and would be willing to see Edward Norton in almost anything, fake English accent or no...

I saw Children of Men recently and strongly recommend it, but don't expect to be useful for much of anything afterwards. Powerful, powerful stuff.

Tom G. is right: After seeing CHILDREN OF MEN I was very glad I didn't have anything pressing to do for the rest of the day. It's one of the few films that I've heard is actually superior to the novel it's based on. CASINO ROYALE is the best Bond movie in years and I think you'd like it (although when I asked my sister what she thought of it, she rolled her eyes in response and muttered something about it being "a guy movie"), but THE PAINTED VEIL, NOTES ON A SCANDAL and MISS POTTER are all quite appealing in their own ways. I know the one you're definitely not interested in: THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS! But wouldn't you have a better time exhausting your Frequent Flyer miles to jet out here and join me for a screening of the little masterpiece I'm planning on seeing today: PRIMEVAL! I caught about 10 minutes the other day while visiting a local cineplex, and it looked ready-made for MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER...

By the way, here's an interesting observation: One of my friends recently pointed out that every man he knows who has seen CHILDREN OF MEN has loved it, while every woman he's talked to who has seen it has had mixed emotions. Hmmm...
-
Another movie that has a similar male/female split that cult of james talked about with Children of Men is Sideways. EVERY woman I have ever mentioned the movie to has not just disliked the picture but HATED it. Some get pretty animated about it. I admit it's kind of a guy flick but I never figured on that sort of reaction.

Sideways was my favorite film of 2004. Maybe that means I'd also like Children of Men. Do I have "guy tastes"?

HA! Or maybe I need to expand my sample pool a bit...

I was sorry I didn't feel informed enough to vote in the survey. I haven't been paying much attention to cinema lately. tag.
