| Celebrity-spotting in Silicon Valley |
I am very happy with my choice of community, but whenever we go down to Palo Alto to visit Joe's dad, I can't help feeling a little envious. Palo Alto has to be one of the nicest places to live in the Bay Area, not to mention one of the priciest, which is why living there really isn't an option for us. You have the beautiful Stanford campus, and pedestrian-friendly University Avenue, which is chock-full of upscale shops and wonderful restaurants, not to mention the Stanford Theater, perhaps the best place in the country to see old movies. (Unfortunately, it's closed this month, but will hopefully be open again soon with a full calendar of classics.)
We were dining at Cafe Rosso & Bianco when Joe spotted Apple Computers honcho Steve Jobs across the room. Can you get any more Silicon Valley glamorous than that? With Macworld starting today, we joked that we should go over and ask him what the big announcement will be (there's always a big announcement at Macworld). Seriously though, I would never think of going up to any celebrity in a restaurant, but a couple of young women dared to ask him for an autograph, which he provided. (The restaurant, by the way, is quite reasonably priced, and the food is delicious. Next time you're in Palo Alto, you can afford to eat where the gazillionaires do. Try the gnocchi!)
A few doors down from the restaurant is a bustling Apple Store -- no telling if Steve ever drops in to check how things are going. I was checking out the new iPod Nanos, which were quite reasonably priced ($149 for the 4 Gb version) and debating whether or not to buy one. I tend to be the type of person who will make do with something until it completely falls apart, which is why I've held onto my old iPod mini for so long, even though it's getting progressively more ornery. My father-in-law kindly offered to let me borrow his Nano for a while to try it out. I remember when the iPod mini was considered soooo tiny, and now look at it next to the nano, which is about the size of half a Hershey bar:

I use my iPod all the time, mainly to listen to podcasts while I'm exercising or doing chores around the house, but the new Nano also plays videos. And when I play, say, the Marketplace podcast, it displays the show's logo, which just happens to be a pile of hundred-dollar bills... such an appropriate motif when you're strolling around Silicon Valley. |

Celebrity-spotting in Albuquerque
I found myself standing about 15 feet from Mayor Marty on Sunday, as we watched a snowplow crash into a pickup from the roof of a parking garage. Then I wandered by Gerard Butler, who was actually accommodating when someone asked to have his picture taken. It was cold out but he obligingly opened up his trench coat to show off his futuristic get-up. I didn't have a camera, thus missing my star encounter and the chance to be photographed throwing around large fake concrete debris.
All on the set of "Game", which wraps up street shooting this week and heads into the soundstages. Obviously, I'll be going to see that one when it comes out!

Embarrassingly, I had to Google Gerard Butler to find out who he was. I didn't see "300." But I know that movie was really popular, so he must be very famous! I would have been way more excited if Mayor Marty had been accompanied by Dukes :)

I didn't know you listened to Marketplace, too! I don't know why I enjoy that show so much, but I really do. I got so used to hearing Kai Rysdall on the Morning Report that it was like driving to work hearing a friend tell you what was going on in the business world. He's now moved on to the evening show, but Scott Jagow is a fine announcer, too. Without Marketplace, I'd have a much hazier understanding of the sub-prime mortgage crisis, that's for sure.

That's ok. I have to always look him up too. I think of him as that actor guy that everyone is really excited about whose name I can't remember.
No Dukes sightings, though he is pretty easy to spot. His daily habits are pretty consistent. There's not a lot of trees near City Hall :)

I've listened to Marketplace almost since the beginning, I think. David Brancaccio was the host for years & years. You should also check out Marketplace Money with Tess Vigelund, which airs weekends and is also available as a podcast. They're both very informative & entertaining shows.
Maybe next time I'm in Albuquerque we can stake out the trees near City Hall and see if Dukes is around!

Maybe he takes appointments? I think both times I was on the 8th floor (Mayor's office) I saw him running around.
Still no Dukes web page, even though he has at least a few fans out there :)

I got my wife a nano for Christmas and she was very grateful. Boy does that sound obscene and pathetic.

And today I met Paul Rodgriguez, though he was introduced to me as George Lopez (something I would consider a major gaffe!)
Albuquerque has become a pretty ridiculous movie town in the last year or two. New Toby Keith film just announced shooting here too.
