| This is not a review of "Sex and the City" |
...because I won't be seeing it. I've never watched the TV show.
I might be really wrong, in which case feel free let me know in the comments section, but my impression of SatC is that it's kind of a fantasy-fulfillment show about four women who drink lots of Cosmopolitans, talk about sex, and shop for fabulous shoes and dresses. The NPR review of the SatC movie implied that there's a fashion show segment, which reminds me of the scene in "The Women" where the action stops dead (and the film switches from B&W to color) so we can look at the most au courant styles of 1939.
Most of my gal pals shop either at Chico's or Target, and for the most part we talk about books and pets much more than we do about men. I like the fact that Cosmos are served in a conical glass, but I find them a bit too sweet and fussy. My favorite cocktail is the Monkeypod at Forbidden Island, which isn't nearly as glamorous looking as a Cosmo.
Now, I realize that one doesn't have to identify with the characters in a film to enjoy it -- I mean, I loved "Juno" and I'm not a pregnant teenager or the parent of one -- but there's just something about the response to the SatC franchise that sounds aspirational, like the four ladies are living the lives women wish they could live.
When I was in New York last summer, I decided I was going to pay special attention to what shoes women were wearing, because of the SatC image that everyone there is always clad in Manolos. Instead, almost every female foot was shod in either flip-flops or athletic shoes. Perhaps they remove them when they get indoors and put on those fancy shoes with the red soles that Oprah wears (but only when she's sitting down -- she says she never walks in them, not even from backstage to the couch on her set). But on the sidewalks of NYC, high heels are rare. In the real world, no one can afford to pay $750 for a pair of shoes they can't walk in.
I actually love shoe shopping, but my holy grail is always to find the most comfortable shoe possible, which tends to lead to absolute fashion disasters, the most egregious being the SAS loafers I bought once when I was suffering from foot pain. Indeed, those ugly shoes saved me from having to visit a podiatrist. I'm always going to sacrifice style for comfort, which is something I'm sure the SatC characters would never, ever do. |
