Stockholm Diary #8: What It Looks Like

The view down our street, with Hedvig Eleonora church in the distance.

I am always amazed by the architecture here. There are residential buildings like this all over the place. Most of the buildings in this part of town seem to date from the late 19th century to the early 1900s.

Sooner or later we'll all be driving these tiny cars.

The market hall, built in 1888 and still going strong.

Darn, I came here 10 months too early.

Smart Cars? Hell - sooner or later we'll all be driving Flintstone cars - foot-powered.

Consumer Reports did not like the Smart Car model available in the US (and turning up in increasing #s in the C-Bus). Apparently it's a very rough drive on imperfect urban asphalt. And the Honda Fit carries 2.5x the passengers for only a couple MPGs' ding. Anyway, you will simply have to make a return visit very shortly after the 1st of June 2009. You ARE thinking of "splitting your time" after all, no?

I was astounded when I first heard that the mileage of the US Smart Car was about the same as my Prius. I mean, why not buy something that's comfortable that doesn't look like you're driving around in a toy? Check out this article (including the comments) -- apparently the Smart Cars in Europe get much better mileage than the U.S. counterparts.

If you want to go back grand opening of the ABBA museum, I'll go. I could probably get a travel allowance!
