| The winning side |
I'm a member of the Human Rights Campaign, a GLBT lobbying organization. It's the only political action group I belong to. Some members of the GLBT community feel HRC isn't sufficiently hardcore, but I think that on the whole, they're doing positive things in Washington. I mean, they're lobbyists, they're going to work within the system and try to get incremental change.
Anyway, I got their e-mail update today and it said that Google has joined HRC as a National Corporate Partner. Out of curiosity, I clicked on the link to see who the rest of their Partners are. They include Citibank, IBM, Bank of America, Chevron, BP, Nike, Volvo, Merrill Lynch, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and UPS.
I think this is why same-sex marriage will eventually be the law of the land, and why "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will soon be history: when companies like Chevron and IBM are lending their corporate logos and support to a GLBT lobbying group, I think it's safe to say that the situation envisioned in HRC mission statement ("an America where lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are ensured equality and embraced as full members of the American family at home, at work and in every community") will be here, sooner or later.
I'm glad to see many of the companies I do business with included in the 2009 Corporate Equality Index. |

Andrew Sullivan who is a conservative gay pundit rails against HRC for being too insidey. I guess that makes them the AARP of the GLBT community.
