I am killing the economy
A few weeks ago, when I titled a post "I am killing the newspaper business," little did I know how swiftly the cancellation of my San Francisco Chronicle subscription would begin to show its effects. The Hearst Corp., which owns the Chron, is now threatening to close the paper, stating that it costs $10 to print and deliver the $2 Sunday paper and that deep job cuts are needed in order to save it from going under. Gee, I'm sure a more expensive newspaper with less staff/resources will be just what's needed to pull the Chron into the black.

Now, it seems that every time I walk down my town's main street, I see more and more businesses that have closed their doors. Two auto dealerships, an ice cream/bubble tea emporium and the Hallmark store are recent casualties of the retail downturn. I try to support my local establishments -- I recently joined a wine club instead of buying my booze at Trader Joe's, I purchase books at the indie shop and not the Borders down the street -- but the truth is, there are loads of stores I've never visited. Heck, I'm not much of a shopper to begin with. Obviously the 4-5 cards a year I bought at Hallmark weren't enough. Maybe we need to institute "Buy Something Day," the opposite of Buy Nothing Day, in order to keep our local merchants in business.

I go out of my way to support local shops, too, but it's frustrating to realize that it doesn't do any good unless a lot of other people feel the way I do. And history has proven that to not be the case! Also, as one whose livelihood depends on the success of a local indie business, I take all these shuttered storefronts pretty hard.

If it happens, I’m going to miss SF Chronicle…

In the mean time, I just came across a very helpful website on the current economic downturn and employment:

It looks like the recessioninfocenter people have been busy little bees, posting blog comments on Huffington Post, Craigslist, the Washington Post, etc. I'll leave their link here because it must be tedious work, and who am I to crush anyone's dreams of making money during the recession.

I did my part. I went to Restaurant Week in DC and ate at four different places, tipping heavily at each one. It's the best I can do.
