| The two best Academy Awards moments |
1. Philippe Petit balancing the trophy on his chin after "Man on Wire" wins Best Documentary 2. Kate Winslet asking her dad to whistle so she will know where in the audience he's sitting
I kind of liked the format with past acting winners giving a little personal shout-out to a current nominee, but it did go on a bit. I really wish the Academy would move the awards no one outside the industry cares about (best sound editing, make-up, costume design, etc.) to the non-televised portion. The show will never be less than three hours long otherwise.
Cheers to the Bay Area's own Sean Penn for winning Best Actor.
If I'm not mistaken, there were no Chuck Workman montages this year. That is a good thing.
Note to everyone wondering why Heath Ledger wasn't in this year's death reel: because he died before last year's ceremony.
This morning, I was saying to Joe that I wish Billy Crystal would host again because I always loved that "It's a wonderful night for Oscar, Oscar Oscar, who will win?" song where he acted out scenes from all five Best Pic nominees. Who knew that a close facsimile of that opening bit would be back tonight, with Hugh Jackman?
You may all scoff at me now for writing, back in mid-October, that "I suspect film buffs will love ['Slumdog'], but will it really be this year's 'Juno'? I think the odds of that are about on par with a kid from the slums winning millions of rupees on a game show -- you never know, but it's highly unlikely." Obviously my powers of prediction leave something to be desired. |

It was a better show tonight. We loved Sean Penn's thank you speech. I wonder how that went over in my home town in KY? I figure sets were turned off when the clips of him kissing a man were shown.

The "Milk" kissing scenes didn't even register with me until I went online after the show and saw that people were mentioning them as being potentially controversial. I guess that just shows how jaded I am after all these years in the Bay Area -- men kissing men, eh, that's no big deal.
